What Event Planning Topics Would You Like to Read About?

Wednesday April 2, 2008

For the last year, the event planning section has been focused on many of the basic activities involved in the business of event planning. Topics have covered a full range of activities from planning popular business events to event planning careers. It's also on my calendar to explore more social events, such as weddings and events that take place in various communities.

We have started to explore international events a little bit. We've also begun the process of profiling various destinations in the U.S. and Europe, and many of the popular activities and meeting venues in these places. And I can assure you that we will continue to work toward profiling many more cities this year and next with the intent of going into more depth.

My goal is to make this site a fantastic resource for corporate, association, non-profit, government and social event planners and administrative staff who plan events and meetings as part of their job. I'd like to help you make good decisions about venues, dates, vendors, refreshments, entertainment and more. I'd like to help you stay organized, save money and reduce stress.

So I am curious, what topics would you like to read about on this site? Please feel free to add your posts right here or send me an email at eventplanning.guide@about.com. Thanks!

I would like to know more about budgets. Out of 100% which percentages to put on a particular line item. Such as, Venue 30 percent of the budget.

Classy corp. event decor ideas are something that is hard to find online. Latest trends like the photos you see in the bizBash magazine always help spark new ideas.
Perhaps a niche for you when profiling cities is providing a “typical conference pattern” in that particular city. Often CVB list all activities that are available, over a 20 mile distance, but an admin may really enjoy seeing a “Two day conference in Chicago” template that takes into account your guests are not going to enjoy 45 min. of transportation for a dinner party.

Independent event planners often wonder how to submit a proposal. I see above Sherri asking what price to charge, perhaps provide a templates for proposals (party template, wedding template, bar mitzvah template, etc.)

Rose, thanks for the suggestion and compliment! There’s a challenge to providing proposal formats because they typically include contractual language — professional advice that should be obtained from an attorney. But I appreciate the nature of the suggestion. I will try to do what I can on the proposal end.

I will also incorporate your idea about listing reasonable activities. I agree that CVBs do not provide sufficient direction; however, they are usually membership organizations that cannot show favortism. I’ll write about that process a bit as an upcoming article and blog. Plus, I think I can subtly point folks in good directions.

And, putting out the word to give folks a chance to submit their event photos and highlights may be a good idea for a future blog. We’ll see what people offer!

Thanks for reading!

Would like to know how to get in to
event planning. I would love to have my
own business. Do I need to go to school?

I am in the same boat with Randee. I am currently in school but am looking for information regarding starting my own business as well. Another helpful post could be compilation of things current event planners wish they knew before getting started or advice for the new kids.

(9) Ciara says:

I am actually doing my college Thesis on the event planning industry and I would like to know more about event production companies, and what it takes to really be successful and profitable as an event planner. I am also interested to see how the industry has changed over the last twenty years, grown, and been affected by society’s new obsession with big events. I would love to read any information you can find on these topics.

Thanks for the ideas! For those interested in getting started in the business, I have written an article that highlgihts the different types of employers of event planners — I consider that to be step 1 in getting a job because you need to know where the bulk of jobs are: http://eventplanning.about.com/od/eventcareers/tp/ercategories.htm.

Then, check out the different departments that hire folks who handle events — although the article is focused on corporate, similar ideas cross over to the nonprofit side (I will write an article about nonprofit jobs in the future):

http://eventplanning.about.com/od/eventcareers/tp/corporateevents.htm

I prefer to advise people to get experience first before starting their own business. But for those who do want to start their own business, I will have an article that highlights most of those requirements in the near future. Check back during the next couple months on some of these requests. And thanks again!
